Silent as Winter

Falling autumn leaves bare the branches,
naked under the cooling sun.

But the pin oak holds on,
wrapped in its papery scales
like a crocheted sweater,
anticipating winter's chill.

.... and they sing.
The chilled breezes rustle the cocoa-hued wrap,
and the whispering chant assures the world ---
                    I AM
